Halos And Rainbows

It's Magic you know - never believe it's not so!

Funky Food Fairy

(or is it Scary fairy?)

Most of us worry about what our kids eat, and with good reason but when it comes to snacks, can they still have the things they love?

I found that fruit is good but sometimes a naughty treat is what’s really wanted regardless of any mummy rules.

Here are some scrummy treats that although not entirely perfect will get more fruit, veg etc and less junk into those tummies whilst still keeping both you and the kids happy - less wars = more smiles!

If you can involve your hungry bumpkins with making these so much the better - entertainment included.

If you child has any allergies don’t try the ideas with their bad foods please!

Fill ice cube trays with green grapes, or berries and 100% fruit juice and freeze. Add little lolly sticks, hand out as cold treats, add to drinks or other puddings.

Ants on a log - peanut butter, celery, raisins

Myspace Glitters

Skinheads on a raft - beans on toast

Cool fruit shapes - cut apples, pears etc into shapes with tiny cutters - if they are not up to fruit skin peel it off first, you can build up to leaving the skin on.

A Dipping we shall go - carrot, celery, cucumber, breadsticks, lettice triangles, rice cakes, orange segments, banana chunks, pinapple rings, marshmallows, etc. Make dips out of peanut butter, salsa, fruit sauce, honey, maple syrup, jam, hazelnut chocolate spread, if the worst comes to the worst melt a little chocolate but just think, if it’s banana dipped in chocky - there’s a whole lot more banana going into that tummy than if you just handed over a bar of chocolate. Remember to check the contents of any shop bought dips, you don’t want to destroy your efforts with lots of salt, colourings or preservatives.

Crisps - get a microwave crisp maker, leave the peal on the potatoe, slice with the peeler if possible or cut as thin as possible, microwave, and enjoy. You can try adding herbs or spices if you like. Add them to your dip selection.

Put equal parts of triple-grain Cheerios, reduced fat cheddar crackers, dried fruits (papaya, bananas, apricots, pineapple, apple, cranberries), and unsalted nuts into an airtight food container and shake, just be aware of any nut allergies etc. Store in the airtight container and just dish out into small bowls or containers. It's ready to eat and can go anywhere.

Fruit is natures candy

Put sprinkles on apple sauce -(apple stewed with a little honey until soft) and your poppet will eat loads more, if you add ice cream or custard make sure there’s far more fruit.

Fruit turnovers of muffins rather than chocolate.

Try to make your own snakcs wherever possible, that way you know what went into them and if the kids helped they are leaning important life skills and keeping out of mischief while you try to help them eat less processed foods.

Home made lollies, milk or fruit juice, perfect for long summer afternoons.

Tortilla Rolls

Food and Fun

I'm told  that this recipe is "Diabetic Friendly" however I have not have that comfirmed by a nutrutionalist so maybe it is better but possibly not 100% good.

An older or more able child will love making these and a younger one will love to help popping things on ready to roll up! Everyone will enjoy the Tortilla Game!

Prep: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

whole wheat tortilla, low fat, 7" diameter
2 tbsp. light cream cheese
1 oz. lean and low-sodium turkey slice
1 oz. lean and low-sodium ham slice
1 oz. Swiss cheese slice
1 iceberg lettuce leaf
2-3 tomato slices

Directions:

Lay tortilla on a flat surface.
Spread cream cheese on one side of tortilla.
Lay the lettuce, turkey, ham, Swiss cheese, and tomato on top of the cream cheese on the tortilla (flat).
Bring the sides of the wrap in and then roll up in the shape of a cylinder.
Wrap each in plastic wrap until ready to serve.
Just before serving, slice wraps in half and remove plastic wrap.

Remember Tortillas are meant to be fun to make and eat, but they're nowhere near as much fun as the...

HUMAN TORTILLA WRAP

You will need

A towel, rug or blanket

a child or as many people as you can get, hee-hee

Lie the towel down flat on the floor

Lie someone on the towel - they're the meat

Tickle, pat and squeeze all the different ingredients onto the person, different movement for each different filling please, if you fancy working on your massage skills now is a good time.

As you do each filling say "here comes the cumumber" or whatever you're adding.

Listen to and join in with the peals of joyful laughter.

Roll the Human Tortilla up and pretend you're going to eat it.

Be careful when you unroll the tortilla person unless you leave them to struggle, hee-hee.

Be prepared to spend all afternoon doing this!

SPLENDID FUN!

I'm not really into advertising but I have a new book that I have to tell you about my Fairies!

jamie at home Cook Your Way to the Good Life - Jamie Oliver cookbook, it's really good, tells you how to cook proper food and how to plant some of it in your garden to use yourself at the right time of year - it is indeed a work of genius.  He even tells you how to make pastry which a lot of clever cook books fail to remember ususally causing uproar in my kitchen til I find the kids receipe books or the use of packet pastry, which although quick is nowhere near as good as homemade.

It's written in a way that even I with Scary Fairy helping  can get food that is edible and enjoy making!

Well worth putting on your Christmas list - I love it!  I may even start a book review page so I can rattle on about it to you all again!  Tonight we're having Eggy breakfast crumpets and smoky bacon - yummmmmy!

Bear watched Jamie cooking spaghetti and now holds the spaghetti, twists it and shouts "just like Jamie Oliver" as he watchs it fan into the pan perfectly, he likes to have 2 or 3 goes!  What a lovely way to get involved with cooking tea.

Bear likes to help chop mushrooms with a dinner knife to go in the bolognaise sauce too.  He can put frozen chips on the oven tray and homemade fishcakes are fun to make in fishy shapes and dip into the breadcrumbs, we make lots and freeze them for other days.
